How do you get into Golf?

How do you get into golf? It’s by far the most common question we get asked that is not related to our golf apparel range.

Now golf, traditionally it’s hardly been a sport for the masses. First of all, purchasing the equipment and clothes can be enormously expensive and if you have those things, then where do you play?

You’d traditionally only be able to join a Golf Club if a certain number of friends nominated you, and if successful, you’d then be required to pay a joining fee and a monthly premium. No wonder it can seem a daunting task to begin playing golf!

Zeon Golf was created by four friends who all grew up around Lytham St Annes. Some of our earliest memories were walking around Royal Lytham in 2001, the Open Championship in which David Duval won his first major. We were only youngsters back then and the game seemed so out of touch. However, times have changed and the game of golf is now more accessible than ever! So we wanted to provide three top tips for those interested in playing golf. Now it is worth saying at this point, we aren’t going to cover clubs (see our blog on a driver fitting experience here) but if you have any questions relating to sourcing clubs, feel free to get in contact!

1.Clothes

It may seem obvious, but clothing is the first tip when considering golf. Whilst the rules relating to clothing in the game of golf have relaxed in recent years, there is still a fairly prescriptive ‘dos’ and ‘avoids’ list when it comes to golf clothing, which we think is well-summarised in the following Golf monthly article.

These clothing rules have traditionally left you with two options; the expensive, traditional brands offering out-dated and shapeless golf apparel, or the more modern, discount, online-only brands that whilst offer at least a dash of colour, are well-recognisable for being budget using poor materials.

It’s for that reason Zeon Golf was founded, offering the quality of the traditional, expensive brands, with shaped, modern designs at a price point that won’t break the bank, nor be recognised as a

budget brand. You can view out full range here, including our best selling Icarus trousers  and our signature Nephele polo shirt.

2. Go and play

So you’ve got the clubs, you’ve got your new outfit courtesy of Zeon Golf, now how do you go about actually playing? Again, traditionally this would have been a major stumbling block in terms of how you get into golf. But the game of golf is becoming increasingly flexible and even more traditional golf clubs are offering the ability to ‘pay and play’.

This essentially does what it says on the tin. You can turn up to a club, pay a small fee and then play, without any hassle or commitment to continue playing in the future. England Golf also offers a helpful search tool to allow you to find golf clubs nearby to yourself. So what are you waiting for?

3. Handicap

Our final tip is get yourself a handicap. Gone are the days when you would be required to join a

physical golf club and submit three score cards to achieve a handicap.

Joining iGolf for just £44 per year will allow you to receive a handicap in line with the World

Handicap System, just like a golf club member would. This will allow you to compete with friends or in competitions and should you join a golf club in the future, your handicap will remain with you so you can continue your golfing journey.
