Tips for a beginner golfer!

So you’re new to golf, a golf beginner, and you have turned up to a golf course for the first time....

You’ve had a quick Google of the rules of golf so you are feeling confident that you will fit into the expected playing standards on the course. How wrong you were.It turns out there is unwritten ‘golf etiquette’ that you need to be aware of. For an experienced golfer, playing with a new golfer is expected and accepted; we were all there once. But playing with a golfer who has poor etiquette around the course; well, that’s a different story and one likely not to gain you any sympathy. Golf etiquette can really make or break a round of golf, especially if you are playing with strangers. That’s why Zeon Golf is here to help by bringing you five easy rules of golf etiquette:

Don’t talk while others are hitting

If in doubt, don’t. That’s the simple rule and one that if you put into action, you’re already off to a good start. Let’s face it, everyone has a bad shot from time to time, but if someone’s bad shot coincides with you speaking during the backswing… well that would be an uncomfortable round. So the first tip, should a player be stepping up or addressing their golf ball, do the safe thing and keep your mouth shut!

The dress code!

What you wear on a golf course matters. And we mean, it really matters. It’s the first thing people notice and we all know, you only get one chance as a first impression. In golf, if you wear the wrong thing, you will literally be asked to leave the course. Whilst hoodies are becoming slightly more common on the golf course, we’d suggest staying clear – it’s something the traditionalists are very against! Where you walk matters

Turns out, despite golf essentially being a sport where you walk around a field, it really matters where you walk. Walking over the wrong bit of field, at the wrong time, is guaranteed to get you some bad looks. This is especially true when on the green, so when someone is putting or lining up a putt, be mindful not to walk between the ball and the hole, or place yourself where your shadow is in the putters line of sight. Both of these actions may put the putter off their shot for double bogey and you’ll almost certainly be to blame!

Mobile phones

Probably the simplest rule we have here. Keep off your phone! You’re out with your mates on a golf course, there is literally nothing better! So don’t let your mobile phone ruin that, and even more important, don’t let a ringtone ruin someone else’s round! Keeping your phone in the bag means that everyone you are playing with feels more engaged and play around the course is often quicker, so leave the phone in the bag, and on silent!

FORE!

Last and certainly not least, Fore. It’s my favourite word on the golf course, mainly because it’s the word I’m shouting after most drives. Hitting another golfer with your wild slice can land you in some pretty hot water, so shout Fore if you ever lose sight of your ball, or believe it’s heading the direction of other golfers. Shout it, and golfers have a chance to protect themselves, you walk over, apologise and have a laugh about it. Don’t shout it, and you’ll likely be hounded around the course and then asked to leave the club house immediately after the round. So if in doubt, FORE!
